ABOUT SOMERSET

INTRODUCTION TO SOMERSET

Bordering Gloucestershire, Bristol, Wiltshire, Dorset and Devon, Somerset is a fantastic county and a popular hen party destination. In fact, we’d go as far to say that it’s the perfect place for adventure and has plenty of hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. Think a wide range of landscapes, breathtaking beaches, exotic woodlands, beautiful lakes and large expanses of lush green spaces.

Combining the best of the coast and countryside, there’s lots of things to do and see and your days can be spent taking in endless views, and exploring famous landmarks such as Cheddar Gorge. It probably won’t surprise you that Somerset is home to a number of towns, villages and cities – each boasting their own charm and character as well as delicious pubs and restaurants which serve some of the finest dishes in the UK.

If you’re looking for a hen party destination that offers a little bit of everything, and more, you won’t go wrong by choosing Somerset…

HOW TO GET TO SOMERSET

Somerset might look really far away on the map but, the truth is, it’s relatively easy to get to by train. From London, it takes around 3 hours and there’s also a coach service from the UK’s capital. Of course, this will take a while longer but there’s nothing a few card games and bottles of fizz won’t sort out. There are also a few small airports in the area but for guests coming from afar Bristol Airport is probably your best option. And once you’re in Somerset, it’s time to ditch the heels and get well and truly acquainted with the gorgeous countryside…

BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN SOMERSET FOR HEN GROUPS

Glastonbury

Glastonbury is one of the most famous places in Somerset and is a town located just below Glastonbury Tor hill. You’ve probably heard of it thanks to the huge music festival that descends on the area every summer. Of course, if you’re around during this time, it’d be rude not to go to the festival! But even if you miss it, the town makes for a great day trip and has a few pubs and walking routes that must be on your list.

Minehead

Minehead is a traditional seaside town with magnificent scenery and everything you could expect from a British coastal resort. Yep, we’re talking fish and chips and rock candy! Not just that but here you can visit the Exmoor National Park which pins Minehead to the coast. The park follows the coastline and offers some fantastic views and walking trails. Back in Minehead, you’ll find a spacious and sandy beach, thatched cottages, a quaint old harbour, a Medieval church and lots of cafes and tearooms to refuel in. There’s also a leafy avenue lined with local shops and eateries. Make sure to try out the cream teas as they’re a speciality here as well as the scrumpy cider that’s produced locally.

Wells

Wells is a city in Somerset that has plenty of hen party activities and attractions to keep you busy – the main ones being Wells Cathedral and Vicar’s Close – which is believed to be Europe’s oldest, continuously inhabited street. Here, you’ll also find some incredible gardens which are ideal for relaxing in after one too many the night before and if you do want to blow the cobwebs off, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. Wells offers horse riding, kayaking, outdoor adventures and more and there’s also long walks and cycling routes that can be enjoyed by all ages. Of course, after such a busy day, it’s only right to book one of the local gastropubs for a luxury evening experience.

Shopping

While Somerset might not be known for its shopping quarters, there’s still plenty of places to enjoy a little retail therapy. Some of the best include Clarks Village, Sovereign Shopping Centre, Gallagher Retail Park, Milsom Place and The Corridor. All of them offer a variety of shops and plenty of places to eat – and you can expect to indulge in independent names, high-street favourites and a few designer labels.

Bars & Restaurants

The UK has a fantastic pub culture and, at the heart of it are areas like Somerset. Every village and town you stroll upon will have its own inn, and gastropubs popping up are putting Somerset on the foodie map. Enjoy locally produced beers and wines, indulge in the freshest food and take shelter from the UK’s weather by a warm fire. If the sun’s shining, there are plenty of pub gardens to spend a few hours in too. Whether looking for a meal or just fancying a few drinks, you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice

BEST HEN GROUP ACTIVITIES IN SOMERSERT

Life drawing

BEST FOR ARRANGING IN YOUR HEN HOUSE
If you’re looking for a hen party activity that can be enjoyed in your very own hen party house, a life drawing session is for you. Your chosen model will come to your accommodation, get the atmosphere going with some drinking games and then get into a series of poses as you sketch away. It’s classy, fun and a guaranteed laugh – especially when your bride-to-be is invited up on the final shot. Her nan is gonna love it!

Watersports

BEST FOR HAVING A SCREAM
Not every bride is at her happiest with killer heels on and red lippie to match. If your bride prefers to get her hair wet and hands dirty, she’ll be delighted at the number of watersport activities on offer in Somerset. The most popular ones include kayaking, sailing and windsurfing but there’s also SUP and motorised ones like jet skiing and water skiing. If you prefer to stay on dry ground, we’re sure you can find a pub to keep warm in too.

Cookery Class

BEST FOR LEARNING NEW SKILLS

What better way to get all of the group together and release a little friendly competition than with a cookery class? Choose from Italian, Indian, bread or even chocolate and get to work as you create a culinary masterpiece – at least that’s the aim. Led by an expert, you’ll learn everything there is to know about the dish and even have the chance to ask your burning questions. The best bit is at the end when you’re able to go around the room and taste each other’s dishes.

A spa day

BEST FOR SITTING BACK & RELAXING

A spa day is always a good choice and when you see the spas on offer in Somerset, you’ll be delighted. You see, many of them are surrounded by lush green countryside, making it a perfect place to relax. Book a few treatments, order some fizz for the jacuzzi and sit back while you put the world to right and breathe away all of your stresses. Ahhhhh.
